Principal Johns' Weekly Message

Weekly Email to Parents

Nation Ford Parents,

1. Each year our school participates in raising support for athletes participating in Special Olympics.  Our primary way of doing this financially is through the Tega Cay/Fort Mill Polar Plunge.  Nation Ford is a Club Unify School, which means we participate in athletic leagues in which we pair our students with special needs with students without special needs in team sports.  Each day during FLEX we also have a tremendous group of our students playing games with our students with special needs.  I can tell you as a school person and as a father this is a big part of the incredible compassionate, accepting, and unified culture we have.  As a Club Unify school all proceeds we raise during the Polar Plunge goes directly to supporting our NFHS Special Needs students as they participate in Club Unify events and the Special Olympics which occur this spring.  NFHS has the largest special-needs pupil group in the district and these incredible kids are a huge part of what make this school so wonderful!   This year the Polar Plunge will be held next Saturday at Baxter's YMCA; our whole school family is welcome!

and several of our teachers and students will be participating in this year's Polar Plunge, as we do each year.  I am humbly asking you to consider supporting us to meet our $5,000 goal.  Please give as you feel led using the below link.  I appreciate you so much!  https://www.classy.org/team/210316

2. A Message from our Foreign Language Dept. :  Cristi Sain, Spanish teacher, will be leading students on a 10 day trip to Spain in June 2020.  Any parent/student interested in this valuable educational opportunity and immersion experience is invited to attend an informational meeting on Tuesday, February 19, at 6:15 p.m. in room C 507 (Mrs. Sain’s room).  Please see the attached flyer for more information and how to RSVP for the meeting.  In addition, feel free to reach out to Mrs. Sain:  sainc@fortmillschools.org with any questions that you may have.

3.  Please see the Spring Sports schedule attached.  Let's go, Falcons!  NFHS Spring Sports Schedules - 2019.pdf

4.  Class Meetings:  This week during FLEX I met with each class to go over expectations and share information I believed will help them finish strong this semester.  Below are some things I shared with our Falcons.  If you think about it, ask them what they thought about their class's meeting this week and give me feedback if you feel led- I would greatly value that.

  • Seniors: (Monday) We spent much of our time talking about leadership.  It is intentional, positive, and invests in other. I shared with them 5 things I wish someone had told me when I was a Senior in high school- Be intentional with your life.  Live below your means. Starve your addictions.  Surround yourself with wise people.  Serve others with your life.
  • Juniors: (Tuesday) I talked wth our Juniors about finishing strong and the power of work ethic - Intelligence is overrated, Talent is overrated, and Effort is everything.  We also spent much time on everyday leadership.  I showed them this short video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVCBrkrFrBE then demonstrated some examples of everyday leadership.
  • Sophomores:  (Thursday)  With our 10th graders I spoke with them about Finishing strong, Focusing on what is important, and Focusing on the big picture.  I spent much of my time with them sharing with them ways to being intentional about decision-making.  The second portion of our time, Josh Causey, our Student Council President talked with them about making the most out of their next 2 year, then our MIT/Lemelson InvenTeam shared their amazing journey earning a grant won by only 15 high schools in the country and planning for their trip to MIT this summer.
  • Freshman:  (Friday)  With our Freshman I talked about Time management and Self-discipline is the most valuable skill one can develop.  The rest of our time 3 of our Student Council leaders (Frank Martinez, Molly Brackett, and Cody Markow) led our Freshmen thorugh strategies to challenge and have the best high school experience possible.

Have a great weekend, Falcons!
